Dual Immersion Academy
Grand Junction, Colorado
“I highly recommend Anna Hileman, who created a mural at our school. She was delightful to work with, understood the unique needs of the population we serve, and completed the project quickly and beautifully.”
Each school mural is accompanied by an original poem, written by Anna to inspire the imagery and deepen the story behind the artwork. This poem was provided in English and Spanish as both languages are taught at the Dual Immersion Academy.
Beneath the Sun
Bajo el Sol
Wingate Elementary School Mural
Grand Junction, Colorado
Beginning with our Wingate Explorers, artist Anna Hileman aimed to demonstrate the vast world ahead for our kids while integrating the extraordinary features of this place we call home, a stepping stone for the journey ahead. As no two butterflies are alike and each butterfly contains every color of the rainbow, each student and staff member’s hand print has been placed within a ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) spectrum, signifying their vital part and attribution to the Wingate community and the world. Additionally, students and staff chose a letter or shape to make their handprint even more distinctive. The final prints to be placed were from Trigger, Wingate’s adored therapy dog. The monarch butterfly was chosen for its locality to this area and as a symbol of the transformation, strength, and journey of Wingate’s students and families.
Furthermore, Anna included local characteristics such as the monument, wild horse, dinosaur fossil, native wildflowers, petroglyphs, and bicycle tracks. The scorpion pays homage to Wingate’s history, signifying the connection of our past, present, and future, while the stars remind us all to reach for our dreams.
Thank you to the Wingate PTO, who planned, funded, and supported this art installation, and Grand Junction Home Depot, Lowe’s, and FCI for supplies and scaffolding.
Rocky Mountain Elementary School Mural Exterior
Clifton, Colorado
In this mural, I sought to capture the school’s core values of education, unity, and nurturing environment for students.
At the heart of the mural, a majestic eagle takes center stage, symbolizing strength, freedom, and ambition. With its wings spread wide, its symbolism encourages students to pursue their dreams and reach new heights.
Adjacent to the soaring eagle stands a vigilant mother eagle, embodying protection and guidance. This nurturing presence reflects the dedication of our school’s faculty and staff, who support students through their educational journey.
Beneath the eagle, its wing transforms into a flowing river, symbolizing both the local landscape and the continuous flow of knowledge and life.
Finally, the Bookcliff mountain range and delicate peach blossoms are depicted, celebrating the area’s unique attributes and reminding us of the natural beauty and growth inherent in one’s journey through life.

The mural continues inside Rocky Mountain Elementary through an 80 foot ribbon around the atrium beginning at sunrise and moving into night, the imagery tells a story of growth and possibility – from a protected nest to eagles soaring towards the stars. Bright, vibrant colors energize the space while calming native flora and fauna ground the mural in place – surrounding students each day with reminders of support, movement, and reaching for their dreams.
Mesa View Elementary Mural
Grand Junction, Colorado
When creating the concept for this mural, Anna took into account the rich history of agriculture, Native Americans and geographical locations of Orchard Mesa. The bees were a last minute addition after a very large swarm gently hovered over the students and families while administering handprints. The hawk is Mesa View’s mascot and also signifies the strength and determination carried within the students, staff and families of Mesa View Elementary. Thank you Mesa View PTO, FCI, Orchard Mesa True Value and Grand Junction Home Depot for supporting this installation.
